Saginaw Report, 2016-2019 (pdf)
This report examines the burden of asthma in Saginaw Couny in comparison to the entire state using survey, hospitalization, Medicaid claims and mortality data from years 2016-2019.

Data source information: Prevalence is the proportion of individuals in a population who have the disease at a point in time or during a given time period. Data sources include:

  • Behavioral Risk Factor Survey: Adult and child level data on current and lifetime asthma prevalence.
  • Asthma Call-back Survey: Adult and child level data on topics such as symptom-free days, comorbid conditions, cost barriers, asthma triggers in the home and missed work or school days due to asthma.
  • Youth Risk Behavior Survey: Asthma current and lifetime prevalence among high school students.

Asthma Education and Management (pdf)
Asthma education and management among Michigan children is summarized in this report. Results are from the 2012-2016 Asthma Call Back Survey and include statistics on medication use, receipt of an asthma action plan and being taught to recognize early signs of an asthma episode.

This surveillance brief summarizes asthma-related data from the 2016 Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey. It includes state level lifetime and current asthma rates as well as data on certain health behaviors and conditions such as COPD, cigarette use and health care prevented cost among those with current asthma.

Asthma Call-Back Survey Brief: Children-2017 (pdf)
Summary of the 2011-2013 Michigan Asthma Call Back Survey results for children with current asthma. The surveillance brief includes data on uncontrolled asthma, healthcare utilization, asthma management, indoor environmental triggers, and school-related indicators among children.

Data source information: Hospitalizations are severe events that increase the risk of asthma death. Asthma hospitalizations are considered preventable – people with asthma can stay out of the hospital if their disease is managed properly.

The data source for asthma hospitalization numbers and rates is the Michigan Inpatient Database, which includes almost all acute hospital discharges that occur in Michigan.
