Description
This medication is an oral tablet that is used for treating asthma attacks by causing muscles in the airways to relax, opening them for easier breathing.
Delivery
Oral tablet, syrup
Dosage
- Adults and children > 9 years of age: 20 mg by mouth 3-4 times per day
- Children 6-9 years: 10 mg by mouth 3-4 times per day
- Children < 6 years: dosed by weight
Proper Use
- Take with or without food.
- Take with food if it causes an upset stomach.
- There is a liquid (syrup) if you cannot swallow pills.
Precautions
Talk with your doctor if you have high blood sugar (diabetes), heart disease, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, or a history of seizures.
Common Interactions
Metaproterenol may interact with other medications including beta blockers, amitriptyline, cocaine, and hydrochlorothiazide.
Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your medications and health problems so they can check for any interactions.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include nervousness, tremor, headache, nausea and dizziness.
Tell your doctor or seek medical attention if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, wheezing, tightness in the chest or throat, trouble breathing or swelling of the face), if you are not able to get the asthma attack under control, chest pain or pressure, or an abnormal heartbeat.

- Protect from heat, light, and water.
- Do not store in a bathroom.
