2002 1st Annual Report of Asthma Deaths in Michigan among 2-34 year olds
This is the 1st Annual Report of Asthma Deaths in Michigan among 2-34 year olds, a joint report of the Michigan State University Department of Medicine and the Michigan Department of Community Health Bureau of Epidemiology. Although the 32 deaths that occurred in 2002 are not a large number, the circumstances surrounding these deaths are dramatic. The deaths are particularly tragic because they are preventable.

This systematic review addresses 5 key questions: (1) whether chronic use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) improves long-term outcomes for children with mild to moderate asthma; and whether chronic ICS use in children results in long-term adverse effects; (2) whether, for patients with mild-moderate asthma, early initiation of ICS prevents asthma progression; (3) whether, in patients with moderate asthma, adding other long-term controllers to low-moderate dosages of ICS improves control; (4) whether adding antibiotics to standard care improves the treatment of acute asthma exacerbation; and (5) whether a written asthma action plan improves outcomes; and whether a peak flow monitor-based plan is superior to a symptom-based plan.

AIM Public Awareness Tool Kit
In 2003, the Asthma Initiative of Michigan provided a Public Awareness Tool Kit to all Michigan asthma coalitions. The goal of the kit is to assist asthma coalitions in their work with the media. It contains sections on print materials, working with the press, broadcast media, media interviews and evaluation. In addition, the appendix contains sample items that may help a coalition get started, including a sample press release and radio PSA.

Allies Against Asthma
Allies Against Asthma is designed to improve efforts to control pediatric asthma. This national program provides support to community-based coalitions which are implementing comprehensive asthma management programs that include improved access to and quality of medical services, education, family and community support, and environmental and policy initiatives. The primary aims of the program are to reduce hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and missed school days; to enhance the quality of life of children with asthma; and to develop a sustainable strategy for asthma management in the community.
